Programme profile
This programme will examine film styles and movements from cinema.
Note: Film studies cannot be studied as a single honour course. It must be combined with one other subject within the two-subject moderatorship (TSM) programme, a joint honours programme.
Programme content
The Film Studies part of a combined degree contains the following:
First & Second Years
Film theory and criticism 1 and 2 ;American cinema from the 1890s to the 1960s;European and world cinemas; Cinema and Ireland
Third & Fourth Years
In the final two years of the degree course students can choose from the wide range of optional courses available to them. Topics covered may include aspects of Hollywood cinema, avant-garde and experimental cinema, documentary film, European cinemas, world cinemas, genre studies, gender and film, film theory and criticism, film style and performance, digital filmmaking, editing and other aspects of film practice. In addition, students are introduced to the principles of script-writing and digital video production.
Entry Requirements
Students must present six subjects of which two must be at grade C or above at Advanced GCE (A-Level. Others must be at least at grade C or above on GCSE or Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS) papers. The six subjects above must include:English, Mathematics and a language other than English.
