You will develop a thorough knowledge of the classical world and a critical approach to textual and material culture. If you have already studied either Greek or Latin at school, you can learn the other language as a beginner.

Programme content


In the First and Second Years you will be introduced to the critical study of ancient history, culture and literature. The language-based courses you take depend on whether you have studied both Greek and Latin before or are taking one of the languages as a beginner.

In the Third and Fourth Years you will progress to an in-depth study of topics in Greek and Roman literature, history and culture. You will refine your analysis of texts in their literary and cultural context through more specialised skills and methodologies, such as textual criticism, linguistics and literary theories.

Greek topics may include Polybius and the Hellenistic Empire, Archaic poetry, Greek comedy, and Hellenistic poetry. Latin topics may include Augustan poetry, Latin historians, Satire, Desire and the body.

In the Fourth Year, you will write a thesis on a subject of your choice.

Entry Requirements


Students must present six subjects of which two must be at grade C or above at Advanced GCE (A-Level. Others must be at least at grade C or above on GCSE or Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS) papers. The six subjects above must include:English, Mathematics and a language other than English.
