Programme profile


The midwife is the primary care provider for women and their babies during normal pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. Midwifery is an autonomous, independent profession and can be practised in various community and hospital settings.

Programme content


The focus of Stage 1 is on the provision of foundational knowledge and skills required for midwifery practice. Subjects include biology, physics, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, social and behavioural sciences and contemporary midwifery practice. Students also observe and participate in midwifery practice in the clinical setting.

Stages 2 & 3 build on knowledge and skills gained in Stage 1. Topics continue to focus on normal pregnancy and childbirth and later move on to complications in pregnancy and childbirth, and caring for babies with special needs. You will have an opportunity to observe and participate in communitybased midwifery practice, gaining experience in a variety of specialist areas.

Stage 4 aims to prepare you for entry into professional midwifery practice and to facilitate your transition to autonomous practitioner. The focus is on key professional issues, including research, social science for healthcare and social policy applied to midwifery.

Profesional Work Experience
The Midwifery degree incorporates periods of clinical placements in each year, including placements in specialist clinical settings during Stages 2 & 3, and a nine-month placement in Stage 4.

Entry Requirements


Students must present six subjects of which two must be at grade C or above at Advanced GCE (A-Level. The other subjects must be at least at grade C or above on GCSE or Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS) papers.The six subjects must include: English, Mathematics, a Lab Science subject and a language other than English.
