Biomedical Science is the term used for the investigations carried out by Biomedical Scientists on samples of tissue and body fluids to diagnose disease and monitor the treatment of patients. Biomedical Scientsists work in partnership with doctors and other health healthcare professionals in investigate samples of tissue and body fluids in order to diagnose disease and monitor patient treatments.

Biomedical Science is a continually changing dynamic profession and involves study of the diverse areas of medical science including Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cellular Pathology, Haematology and Transfusion Science. It provides training in cutting edge technologies to facilitate investigation of disease and medical research

Programme content


Initially, you will syudy modules in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics and the influence of science and medicine on society.

You may then focus on specific diseases and disease processes, to learn more about the development of new, more effective means of diagnosing, treating and preventing illness. This will include supporting modules in Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Drug and Biomarker Discovery and Research Methods.

The final stage builds skills in biomedical research through interactions and research rotations with international researchers in a range of disease areas. The degree will develop a fundamental knowledge in the translation of scientific discovery into clinical utilisation.

Entry Requirements


Students must present six subjects of which two must be at grade C or above at Advanced GCE (A-Level. The other subjects must be at least at grade C or above on GCSE or Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS) papers. The six subjects must include: English, Mathematics and a language other than English.

A-Level required, at Grade C or above, in Maths and a Lab Science.
