Bioinformatics has facilitated one of the greatest scientific advances of the 20th century - decoding the human genome - an important first step on the journey to solving the "mystery of life". Bioinformatics has now been established as an independent discipline in science and education. Bioinformatics is an important link between computer science, mathematics, statistics and life sciences such as biology, genetics, medicine, or pharmaceuticals. With the help of methods in computer science, Bioinformatics aims to analyse biological data, mathematics, and statistics as well as to interpret, visualise, and simulate data in order to understand molecular biological processes. This knowledge offers new opportunities and applications in different areas:
- Biology, to understand the processes and regulations within a cell, to obtain new insight into
developmental processes, to construct the evolutionary tree of life. Focus is on molecular
biology disciplines.
- Medicine, to understand the parthenogenesis and processes of diseases.
- Genetics, to find genetic causes for diseases and bringing insights to the evolution of mankind
- Pharmaceuticals, to develop new drugs.
This programme is run in cooperation with the University of South-Bohemia in České Budějovice (Budweis), Czech Republic. The first year of the study takes place in Budweis, the second year of study takes place in Linz, and the third year of studies is spent in both cities. The programme focuses on base-knowledge computer sciences, statistics, mathematics, biology, genetics, and biochemistry.
