Programme profile
Food Science develops your scientific knowledge of how to produce high-quality, safe and nutritious foods for the global market. As a food scientist you will have a role to play in all aspects of the food chain from production at farm level to the retailer, to the consumer.
Programme content
Stage 1: Focuses on the core sciences of biology and chemistry. There is also an Introduction to Food, Diet & Health module, to give a flavour of later stages of your degree.
Stages 2 to 4: Cover the applied sciences including: Food Physics and Food Analysis, Microbiology and Sensory Science, as well as Principles of Agricultural Production. You progress to the major food science modules, including New Product Development, Human Nutrition, Food Chemistry and Food Processing.
The last stage focuses on the technology and chemistry of meat, dairy and fermented foods. Food safety and marketing are also important aspects of the course.
Entry Requirements
Students must present six subjects of which two must be at grade C or above at Advanced GCE (A-Level. The other subjects must be at least at grade C or above on GCSE or Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS) papers. The six subjects must include: English, Mathematics, a Lab Subject and a language other than English.
