Programme profile
This programme is about game design, game development and how games are implemented to achieve specific objectives. You will work on game concepts, 2D and 3D artwork, game development and game evaluation, adjusted in line with current developments in the curriculum. While working in a team, you learn how you can turn a game concept into a final product and how to involve the end user in the development of the product. There is extra emphasis on research, innovation, intercultural communication and entrepreneurship. Furthermore, you will work on developing specific professional skills needed as a game designer, game artist, game developer or game evaluator.
Programme content
In the first year, you will be introduced to all the majors of the Communication & Multimedia Design programme, focusing on the basics of game design, visual & interaction design, programming and user experience. The first half of the year will focus on concepting & prototyping a game and developing it (making it digital). During the first year you will be working in different teams and on actual products from the professional field.
Second year:
After the first year you will specialise in game design and get challenging applied game design cases. You will also dive into game development. You will learn to use game programming tools like Unity 3D, learn more about programming in C# and use these tools to build games for Virtual Reality and mobile. In the Game Lab you will work in multidisciplinary teams of cases of real clients. You will take charge of your project and not only come up with an concept, but also develop it and create a final polished product. Local experts will support you and you will involve end-users in the development of the product
In the GameLab you can propose any idea. However, only the best ideas will be discussed after being judged by local experts from the industry. Judges will take into account creativity, innovation, as well as monetisation and technical feasibility. Concepts are adjusted and teams reshuffled until production commences. Then, a larger and more capable game development team works on making the best ideas a reality.
From the third year, you will be able to choose your own study path. You will complete an internship in the Netherlands or abroad at a company that suits your learning objectives. Additionally, you have the option to specialise in a subject that you find interesting by choosing a minor, either in Groningen or in another country. Electives include 3D & Animation, social media or photography. As a minor you could choose Game On, Applied Psychology or Art & Technology.
The fourth year is built around your graduation assignment. You will look for creative solutions for a complex communication problem with the help of interactive media. In consultation with companies and university faculty, you complete an innovative graduation assignment. During the year, you will follow theoretical modules in subjects related to Game Design & Development.
