This programme is run at University College Utrecht (UCU) , a college of Utrecht University.

The Transnational Law Program (TLP) is aimed at training students in different national legal systems. UCU offers this programme in close cooperation with the Washington University School of Law in Saint Louis (WUSOL), Missouri, US. As a TLP student you enroll in the Social Science major at UCU, taking a set number of law courses. In the third year you go on exchange to WUSOL for a semester. By taking law courses at both UCU and WUSOL, TLP students acquire their legal skills and knowledge within the context of the two major longstanding legal traditions of civil law and common law, each in its natural environment. After completion of the program you have access to some of the Masters in Law (LLM) programs at Utrecht University and WUSOL.

Note: Students who pursue a career as a barrister, solicitor in their own country will need to enrol on the requisite professional training courses

Fee includes standard statutory Tuition Fee of Eur 2143 plus an Institutional Fee

Programme content


Year 1:
You take courses in at least two departments, as part of the breadth requirement. Offerings in Humanities, Science, and Social Science include courses that provide a general survey of a discipline, geared to students of all academic backgrounds. All first years take Academic Skills and Practice. You also start learning a second language, from French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Dutch and ancient Greek/Latin.

Years 2 and 3:
Major in Social Sciences in Law

The Transnational Law Programme [TLP] is aimed at training students in different national legal systems. UCU offers this program in close cooperation with the Washington University School of Law in Saint Louis (WUSOL), Missouri, US.

After completion of the programme you have access to the Masters in Law (LLM) programs at Utrecht University and WUSOL.

Entry Requirements


3 A-levels , inc Maths at AS or A2. UCU prefers students to present a minimum of three A-levels over C [at an average of B] or 32 points in IB. Exceptional candidates with lower grades/points may be considered.

Scottish Students are required to have a SQC with 2 Advanced Highers and at least 4 Highers. Subjects to include Maths.

Six subjects at Leaving Certificate, including at least three at H3. LC subjects to include Maths.[Hons Maths preferred but Pass will be considered].

UCU prefers students to have a minimum of 480 points. Exceptional candidates with lower points may be considered.

Note: an earlier deadline has been introduced [in addition to 01 February deadline], an Early Decision Deadline, where, if all required documents are submitted by 01 January, students will have a decision on admittance by 01 March.
