Programme profile


As a graduate of this programme, you will be qualified to plan, manage and handle technical and administrative work in project design and execution within the construction industry. The programme gives you a good level of knowledge in architecture, load bearing analysis, construction, digital drawing techniques, advanced digital management techniques, technical services, energy calculations, passive design technology, planning and management.

The learning process on the programme involves studying as a member of a project group where the group designs the project documentation in digital form for: 1) client approval 2) planning permission and 3) construction. Real life projects vary in difficulty starting with single family houses in the 1st semester and end with four storey commercial buildings or large sports halls, giving a wide and varied under-standing.

You have the option to end the programme after two years and earn an AP Degree in Building Technology.

Programme content


In the first year, focus is on study areas connected with the overall planning and erection of family homes as well as an emphasis on construction details, building materials and process planning.

From the second year, modules include Building Materials [eg wood and concrete]; Building and Construction Drawings; Construction Details; Conversion and Renovation of older buildings; Construction of Industrial and Sports Buildings. You will also have a choice of electives,

The 6th semester consists of a 20-week industrial placement either in an architects or engineering practice or with a building contractor. The 7th semester consists of an elective assignment and the final Bachelor Project.

Progression


The university currently offers no related Masters programmes, taught through English.

Entry Requirements


General Certificate of Education (with examination in 8 subjects where at least 3 are A-levels, alternatively 2 A-levels + 2 AS-levels. Subjects to include Maths

Leaving Certificate, showing at least 6 subjects of which at least 2 Higher Level subjects (at least Grade C3, other subjects at least Grade D3 [Pass at A or B will be considered]. Pass Maths will be considered for Maths requirement. FETAC Level 5 Certificates and Level 6 Advanced Certificates will be considered for admission only to same study field as they would gain entry for in Ireland
