Programme profile
International Languages is a very flexible degree combining advanced language skills with an understanding of the literature, history and culture of the countries where these languages are spoken. Choose from French, German, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese. You can study any of these languages at an advanced level , or you can take Italian, Spanish, German or Portuguese as a beginner.
International Languages focuses on developing your critical faculties and cross-cultural awareness. Much of the teaching is in small groups, which encourages your development as an independent learner.
A crucial element of the degree is the fully credited year abroad, where you have a unique opportunity to become immersed in another culture
Programme content
First Year: You take courses in two languages, one at advanced and the second either at advanced or at beginner level, as well as:Two core intercultural modules; Choice of a variety of modules in linguistics, literature, history and cultural studies; A third language if you wish.
Second Year: You focus on two main languages, and a third language if you wish. You also choose whether to retain a broad focus, mixing literary, historical, cultural and linguistic studies, or follow a pathway specialising in one of these areas.
Third Year: Study abroad. You select from a range of linguistic, literary, historical and cultural modules at your host institution.
Final Year
Return to UCD to continue the pathway chosen in second year. Modules may cover: Literature; Film; Culture; Second-language Teaching & Learning; Research project
Entry Requirements
Students must present six subjects of which two must be at grade C or above at Advanced GCE (A-Level. Others must be at least at grade C or above on GCSE or Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS) papers. The six subjects above must include:English, Mathematics and a language other than English.
